Association Between Metabolic Markers and Amount of Alcohol per Occasion in Korean Men
Abstract
dc:descriptionOBJECT: To investigate the association between amount of alcohol per occasion and mean values of systolic and diastolic blood pressure, fasting blood sugar, lipid level, leukocyte count, homocysteine, high sensitive C-reactive protein(hs-CRP), albumin, aspartate aminotransferase(AST), alanine aminotransferase(ALT), r-glutamyl transpeptidase(r-GT) and uric acid. SUBJECT: A total 2,996 healthy men above 20 years of age who had visited a health promotion center in a university hospital from January, 2006 to December, 2006. METHOD: Subjects were classed as nondrinker, or current drinkers who averaged <40g, 40-80g, 80-120g, >120g of alcohol per occasion. The association between alcohol consumption and metabolic markers was examined by drinking habits. RESULT: The mean age of participants was 47.0 ± 9.8 years and the mean body-mass index(BMI) was 24.3 ± 2.8kg/m2. 79.2% were drinkers and typical amount of alcohol per occasion were 68.35 ± 45.08g. Alcohol consumption showed a J-shaped relationship with mean values of systolic blood pressure(p for trend=0.000), diastolic pressure(p=0.000), total cholesterol(p=0.000), fasting blood sugar(p=0.000), albumin(p=0.000), AST(p=0.000) and ALT(p=0.000) and U-shaped relationship with mean values of leukocyte count(p=0.021), homocysteine(p=0.000) and hs-CRP(p=0.000) even after adjustment for age, smoking, BMI and physical activity. And HDL-cholesterol, r-GT, and triglyceride showed a positive association with increasing alcohol intake(p for trend=0.000). LDL and uric acid had no difference within groups. CONCLUSION: The beneficial values of metabolic markers were found in alcohol intake of <40g per occasion in Korean men.
