The Immunoexpression of Nerve Growth Factor and Substance P in human Symapthetic Ganglia

Chronic low back pain continues to be a significant clinical and economic problems. Discogenic low back pain is a common cause of chronic low back pain. It arises from the disc itself and the several mechanism of its production in uncertain. Discography is the most important test for diagnosing discogenic back pain. Previous studies have described the changes in extracellular matrix of the intervertebral disc with respect to aging and degeneration, but very little has been written on the possible roles of various cytokines, neuropeptides and other inflammatory mediators in disc degeneraton and low back pain. The purpose of this study is to immunoexpression of nerve growth factor and substance P in human paravertebral sympathetic ganglia and to analyze correlation between nerve growth factor, substance P, and positive discogram. Forty-three sympathetic ganglias obtained during anterior interbody fusion of lumbar spine(performed discography previously) were used to observe the expression pattern of nerve growth factor and substance P with immunohistochemical stain. We discovered immunoexpression of substance P in human paravertebral sympathetic ganglia with positive discogram, but not nerve growth factor. There was significant correlation between immunoexpression of substance P and discogenic low back pain.
