Development of Natural Filling Cystometer and Comparison with Conventional Cystometry
Abstract
dc:descriptionThe purpose of this study is to introduce a newly developed natural filling cystometry (NFC) and compare its difference with the conventional retrograde filling cystometry (RFC) on spinal cord injured patients with neurogenic bladder. Three persons (two spinal cord injuries and one stroke) with voiding symptoms were recruited for testing the NFC. As urine filled inside the bladder, the transurethral and rectal catheters transmitted respectively the intravesical and abdominal pressures to the digital manometers. The pressures were stored within the portable computer and turned into graphs indicating pressure changes. The NFC is thought to be a physiological test that is affordable and convenient because of its simple structure and small size. The NFC and the RFC were then performed on spinal cord injured patients with neurogenic bladder to see if there were any comparable differences. In the detrusor underactivity group, there was no significant difference between the NFC and RFC. In the detrusor overactivity group, the end filling pressure was lower, compliance at end filling pressure higher, and bladder volume larger in the case of NFC than RFC. Also, detrusor overactivity detection rate was notably higher in the case of NFC. Therefore, NFC is thought to be a useful tool in evaluating the neurogenic bladder of spinal cord injured patients particularly because it can detect detrusor overactivity which was less detectable in RFC.
