An Investigation of Heat Transfer to the Implant-Bone Interface and Marginal Gingiva During Preparation of Implant Abutments in the Mouth: in vitro study
Abstract
dc:descriptionThe aim of the present study was to assess in vitro the heat generated within the implant body when preparing implant abutment of the Osstem implant system to estimate the potential risk of tissue and bone damage of individual abutment preparation. The domestic Osstem implants(Osstem dental implant, Pusan, South Korea), with diameter of 4mm, length of 13mm of the USII(external hexagon connection) implant fixture and with diameter of 4.1mm, length of 13mm of the SSII(internal hexagon connection) implant fixture were used and thermocouple wire was attached to the cervical, middle and apex of the machined surface. Cemented, Solid and ZirAceTM Abutment were connected with these fixture. Each abutment was prepared with high and low speed handpiece during 30 seconds. The specimen was placed under water of 37°C and the temperature was maintained throughout the procedure. The data was gathered using the K type thermocouple as the temperature measuring sensor, the LabView(National Instument, Texas, US) as the software in the monitoring system, PXI 6259(National Instrument, Texas, US) as the hardware. Each experiment group was read through the thermocouple wire every 0.5sec 5times each. When Cemented Abutment and Solid Abutment were prepared without air-water cooling, extreme overheating was provoked, reaching the critical temperature that would lead to irreversible bone damage within only a few seconds. But ZirAceTM Abutment was not the same. Especially, in the middle and apex area, extreme overheating was not found when it was without air-water cooling. So, when Titanium Abutment was prepared without enough cooling it can be concluded that there may be side effect to surrounding bone or soft tissues.
