Correlation of Hepatic 18F-Fluorodeoxyglucose Uptake with Fatty Liver and Liver Function Tests
Abstract
dc:descriptionLiver demonstrates heterogenous FDG uptake pattern and sometimes shows abnormally increased uptake even though there is no malignant tissue. There was no previous study to correlate these various pattern of hepatic FDG uptake with benign liver disease. Therefore, we evaluated the significance of FDG hepatic uptake associated with fatty liver and liver function tests. We reviewed a total of 188 patients (male/female:120/68, mean age:50±9) who underwent PET/CT for screening of malignancy. Patients with DM or previous severe hepatic disease had been excluded. The FDG uptake in liver was analyzed semiquantitativly using ROI on transaxial image (segment 8) and we compared mean standardized uptake value (SUV) between normal and abnormal group, based on fatty liver, liver function test (ALT, AST) and γ-GT. We also evaluated effects of alcoholic history and body mass index on hepatic FDG uptake in the fatty liver patients. There was statistically significant difference of mean SUV between normal and abnormal groups based on fatty liver and liver function tests. However, hepatic FDG uptake of abnormal γ-GT group showed no significant difference from normal one. There was also no significant difference of mean SUV between normal and abnormal groups the basis of alcoholic history and body mass index within fatty liver patients. Fatty liver was the only independent factor which had effect on FDG uptake according to multivariate analysis. In conclusion, FDG uptake in liver was strongly correlated with fatty liver and it might be induced by inflammatory change of fatty liver.
