Change in Students' Attitudes Knowledge toward Older People : Effect of the College Educational Program
Abstract
dc:descriptionOBJECTIVE : The study was conducted to determine the effect of an education program to improve attitudes and knowledge about older people on college students. SUBJECTS & METHODS : Six hundred college students in Gyeonggi Province and Seoul area were selected for study. They were classified into 3 groups: intervention group, control group and past intervention group. The past intervention group participated in the education program for 16 weeks. The past intervention group had received education for 16 weeks an year ago. The students' level of change in the knowledge and attitude of elderly people was assessed using a pre and post test design. RESULT : When comes to the knowledge about the elderly, most students have exactly attitude on the health, on the other trait, intervention group had a higher score, on attitude and the knowledge than the control group and past intervention group who were educated 1 years ago. Most students recognized the importance of education about the aged and their perceptions toward the elderly changed positively. CONCLUSION : In Korea, with a rapidlu aging population, it is important that college students maintain a positive attitude and correct knowledge about elderly people. College education may play a vital role in this endeavor.
