Evaluation of Neurotoxic Effect for the Low-Dose Mixed Organic Solvents Exposed Workers by using Posturography
Abstract
dc:descriptionUntil now, there have been few effective screening instruments available for detecting the neurotoxic effects of organic solvents before symptom appear. Therefore, this study was conducted using static posturography to investigate the neurotoxic effects on workers exposed to mixed solvents under the TLV level in Korea. Forty-one workers (mean age 41.5) from 4 factories exposed to mixed organic solvents and 82 non-exposed referents (mean age 42.9) were examined. The duration of the exposure ranged from 0.2-30 years (mean 4.2 years) and the life-time cumulative exposure level (CE) was estimated on the basis of each participant's occupational history and biological monitoring. The methods used included static posturography and self-administrated questionnaires of neuropsychiatric symptoms (Scandinavian Questionnaire 16). The exposed group showed a largersway area and length with the eyeopen(Area_EO,Length_EO)ascompared with non-exposed group. Thus, based on a linear multiple regression model, a statistically significant positive correlation was demonstrated between posturalsway and organic solvent exposure. However, there was no significant association between neurotoxic symptoms and sway variables. It was concluded thatthe exposure to organic solvents in industrial environments under the TLV level causes central nervous system disturbances, which are notalways diagnosable from visible symptoms but can become apparent under analys is with static posturography.
