Abstract
dc:descriptionPurpose of this study is to investigate the relationship between obesity and falls in adults over 60 years old from the aspect of BMI and waist circumference using representative data of Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. 2007~2013 data of Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey were used as research data, and complex sample design analysis was conducted for statistical analysis. According to the BMI classification standard of Korean Society for the Study of Obesity ("KOSSO"), low weight of older adult was 3.7%, normal weight was 35.7%, overweight was 25.5%, and obesity prevalence rate was 35.1% while obesity prevalence rate was 3.7% according to the WHO BMI classification standard. Based on waist circumference, abdominal obesity prevalence rate was 37.6% and fall experience rate was 2.8%. Result of analysis on the relationship between obesity and falls showed that low weight as per the KOSSO BMI classification standard had a lower fall tendency than normal weight while overweight and obesity had a higher fall tendency but there was no significant difference. Obesity as per the WHO BMI classification standard had a higher fall tendency than normal weight but there was no significant difference. Abdominal obesity due to waist circumference had a higher fall than normal weight, which showed significant statistical relationship. Above research result can be used as basic data for prevention and management of obesity and fall program of older adults in our country and also can be served as a ground to connect the obesity and fall program.
