Association between Air Pollution and Cancer Incidence by region

Abstract

dc:description

OBJECTIVES: This study investigated the relation between air pollution and cancer incidence in Korea to determine the pollutants at which incidence rates increase and to find out the influence of carcinogens on cancer incidence. METHODS: This study carried out the examination of relation between cancer incidence and air pollutants through ecologic study. Also the influence of carcinogens on cancer incidence were analyzed by risk assessment method. RESULT: This study found that NOx and PM10-related pollution were mainly associated with cancer. The more concentration of NOx and PM10 were higher, the more cancer incidence ratio increased significantly. Each 10㎍/㎥ elevation in NOx and PM10 air pollution was associated with approximately 1.36 and 1.95 times for adult male and 2.34 and 2.72times for adult female increased risk of cancer, respectively. In carcinogens, relation between exposure quantity and cancer incidence ratio was negative when point source was only considered. But that was positive when exposure quantity was calculated by point and non-point source. CONCLUSION: This study found that NOx and PM10 were associated with cancer and that carcinogens by non-point source had influence on cancer much more than by point source. This result suggests the necessity of the more comprehensive research for prevention of air pollution, specially carcinogens by non-point source, on population.
