Effects of Class Ⅲ Horseshoe Appliance on Pharyngeal Airway Space and Tongue Position

Class III malocclusion with anterior crossbite should be treated early, and horseshoe appliance can be used as one of treatment options. Recent studies have reported that the orthopedic appliances cause the change of airway dimensions. The purpose of this study is was to investigate the effect of Class III horseshoe appliance on the airway dimension and the tongue position. The cephalograms of 20 children treated using Class III horseshoe appliance were taken at pretreatment, posttreatment, and retention periods. The airway dimension and the tongue position of subjects were measured and compared. The nasopharyngeal airway dimension was increased, and the oropharyngeal airway dimension decreased but rebounded at the retention period, while the hypopharyngeal airway dimension showed was increased significantly right after the treatment but decreased in the retention period. Continuous follow-ups and successive treatments should be accompanied not to decrease the tongue height for the stable treatment results after using horseshoe appliances in growing Class III malocclusion patients.
