The Efficacy of Overlapping Method Using Absorbable Copolymer in Reconstruction of Infero-medial Orbital Wall Fractures with Bony Strut Loss
Abstract
dc:descriptionPURPOSE: To report the results of surgical repairing of infero-medial orbital wall fractures accompanying with loss of bony strut by overlapping method using Resorb X® plates (poly(D,L)-Lactic acid). METHODS: To repair infero-medial orbital wall fractures with loss of bony strut, we bent the medial aspect of plate for floor fracture according to the anatomical structure and then we inserted the floor implant as which was supported by anterior, posterior and lateral margins of floor fracture. After then the medial implant was inserted as which was supported by the bended medial edge of the floor implant. Postoperatively, we analyzed the outcomes of 21 patients about the postoperative enophthalmos, limitation of eye movement (LOM) and diplopia. The diagonal lengths of the orbit in the operated side and not traumatized one from the coronal view of the postoperative CT scans were compared to determine the success or failure of the reconstruction. RESULTS: The average postoperative enophthalmic value was 0.5mm and no significant difference between the orbital diagonal lengths of the operated eye and non-operated eye was noted. The LOM shown in 7 patients out of 8 was completely resolved during the postoperative follow up period. All patients with diplopia, including one patient who showed partial remission of LOM, experienced complete resolution of the symptom. No other complications related to the implant were recorded. CONCLUSIONS: Infero-medial orbital wall fractures with the loss of bony strut can be successfully repaired by overlapping method using Resorb X® implants.
