A study ofTraumaPatient's Characteristics Transportedby Helicopterand Appropriacy of Helicopter Transportation
Abstract
dc:descriptionIt is well known that the transportation time from the scene to the hospital for critically injured patients is crucial. For last 30 years helicopter transportation(HT) has been grown dramatically in developed countries. However, there has been many debates on HT, because of the high expenses and the potential risks during the flight. Further more, severly injured patients are needed quicker transportation time, so the HT is more considered. As a result of this, the out come of the patients transported by helicopter is poor than ground vehicles. Patients transported by helicopter run by National Emergency Management Agency and Gyeonggi-do Fire Services from April 2011 to April 2013 were identified by review of their medical records. Data collected for each patient included age, gender, mechanism of injury with or without the medical staff onboard, Glasgow Coma Scale(GCS), Glasgow outcome Score(GOS). In South Korea, the government has established Dr. Heli program since 2011. However, HT is notutilized very often. Thus, this study shall contribute to the development of HT covering all of the Korean peninsula, and HT activation protocols as well.
