Effect of extraction time and impaction type on complication after extraction of lower third molars

The impaction type of the third molar in the lower jaw is classified in various ways. This suggests that flap elevation tooth and bone cutting and time of extraction depends on the degree of impaction in the third molar of the lower jaw and thus they affect the complication after extraction. Therefore, this study classifies the degree of impaction in the third molar of the lower jaw which is associated with the difficulty in extraction and subsequently identifies the impact of the time of tooth extraction on the complications after extraction to minimize the complications of extraction of third molars. This study includes a total of 86 patients who extracted the third molar in the lower jaw at Dongsuwon Hospital dental clinic from Jul. to Sept. 2013. after extraction of the third molar in the lower jaw, the patients were investigated to see if there were any pain, facial swelling, trismus, damage to adjacent tooth, delayed bleeding, dysaesthesia, and dry socket. Collected data was statistically analyzed with SPSS ver. 19.0 was used. 1. there were statistically significant diffirences in pain and facial swelling (Tragus ~ outer mouth corner), trismus, according to extraction time. 2. there were statistically significant diffirences in pain and facial swelling (Lateral canthus~ Gonial angle, Tragus~Pogonion), trismus, according to impaction type. 3. There is no significant difference statistically in other complication. These results show that pain, facial swelling and trismus develops more frequently the more deep in tooth impaction and the longer the time of tooth extraction. Conclusively, adequate information on impaction type and reducing the extraction time will be the important factors to decrease the complications after third molar extraction in the lower jaws.
