Oral Health Education of Dental Hygienist on Medically Compromised Patients.
Abstract
dc:descriptionBy researching the actual condition of oral health education for medically compromised patients which is carried out by dental hygienists in the dental office and comparing the sociodemographic variables with the actual condition of oral hygiene education, this study aims to provide basic research data to improve the quality of the oral health education for medically compromised patients. Respondents were total 252 dental hygienists who are currently employed at dental clinics. Research tools were used to research the actual condition of the general oral education and the oral education for medically compromised patients. Especially for the latter study, the survey was conducted using a 5 point Likert scale. A frequency analysis was used as a method of analyzing the research to grasp both the respondents' sociodemographic variables and the actual condition of oral hygiene education. Analyzing Cronbach's alpha, delivering dental treatment precautions and practicing oral health education showed a high level of internal consistency reliability. To discover whether the sociodemographic variables contribute to differences in notification of dental treatment precautions and conduct of oral health education respectively, independent two-samples t-test and ANOVA were employed. Muliple regression was used to figure out how sociodemographic variables affect the awareness of notification of dental treatment precautions and conduct of oral health education. The respondents were asked to rank the extent to which they inform dental treatment precautions and conduct oral health education for patients with various medical conditions including hypertension, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, osteoporosis, kidney disorder, transplant operation, dialysis, and infectious disease. Oral health education for patients with pregnancy showed the highest average score and the lowest was for patients with a kidney disease. In the case of patients with osteoporosis and transplant operation, the survey suggested the older the respondents, the higher average score. When there were more dental hygienists and dentists at a medical institution, the higher average score was recorded. The survey indicated the number of years of service plays an important role in both delivering dental treatment precautions and conducting oral health education for medically compromised patients. Especially, in the case of patients with transplant operation, a statistical significance was shown. The scale of a medical institution also has an impact on how the respondents inform patients of dental treatment precautions: the average scores ranked by respondents working at general hospitals and university hospitals were higher than those from local clinics. As for oral health education for medically compromised patients, the average scores of patients with osteoporosis, kidney disorder, transplant operation, dialysis, and infectious disease, from both general hospitals and university hospitals were higher than those from local clinics. In conclusion, the result from the research suggests the sociodemographic variables have an influence on oral health education for medically compromised patients by dental hygienists. Therefore, as dental hygienists receive refresher education and continued education, it is important that both refresher education and continued education provide them with appropriate information for their work environment.
