Association of Metabolic Syndrome and Smoking with Coronary Artery Calcification in Health Screen Examiness of men
Abstract
dc:descriptionCoronary artery calcification Score, which is an indicator to predict coronary artery stenosis, has been known to be an independent risk factor of occurrence in ischemic heart disease while it has been reported that metabolic syndrome increased the risk of coronary heart disease and its mortality three times more. Furthermore, studies have found that smoking increases the risk of metabolic syndrome and cardiovascular disease. As a result, in this study, association among coronary artery calcification, metabolic syndrome, and smoking has been examined. The present study was conducted with 775 adult males who took coronary MDCT at the Health Examination Center in a University Hospital in Gyunggido from January 2, 2010 to December 31, 2012. The coronary artery calcification increased more significantly in a group of older age and higher body mass index (BMI) while metabolic syndrome, abdominal obesity, high blood pressure, and high fasting blood glucose showed significant correlation. Furthermore, as more components of metabolic syndrome were found, distribution of coronary artery calcification also increased significantly. In order to determine a correlation among coronary artery calcification, metabolic syndrome, and smoking, multivariate logistic regression analysis was conducted including ages and BMI as covariates, which also influence coronary artery calcification. The results showed that metabolic syndrome increased 1.84 times (95% CI: 1.33-2.54) of the risk of coronary artery calcification significantly, and the abdominal obesity and high fasting blood glucose among the components of metabolic syndrome increased 1.45 times (95% CI: 1.04-2.04) and 2.63 times (95% CI: 1.36-2.94) of the risk of coronary artery calcification significantly. On the other hand, smoking was not significant to the risk of coronary artery calcification statistically. In conclusion, it could be seen that metabolic syndrome is associated with increases in the risk of coronary artery calcification.
