The purpose of the study was to determine the association of depression and anxiety in stroke patients with daily life activities and rehabilitation efforts and to provide basic information needed to promote physical activities and rehabilitation success among stroke patients. A total of 99 stroke patients in 5 university hospitals and 1 rehabilitation center based in Suwon, Gyeonggi Province and Seoul enrolled in the study. And data were collected during the period from August 2006 to September 2006. The Modified Barthel Index, developed by Shah et al.(1989) to evaluate daily life activities of stroke patients, was used in this study. A Beck Depression Inventory (BDI), developed by Beck et al.(1961) and modified and translated into Korean by Han Heung-Moo(1986), was used to measure depression levels. A Beck Anxiety Inventory (BAI), developed by Beck et al.(1988) and modified and translated into Korean by Yuk Sung mu(1996), was used to measure anxiety levels. A SPSS PC 12.0 was employed for statistical analysis, including descriptive statistics, t-test, one-way ANOVA, Pearson's correlation and multivariate regression. 1. Daily activity scores ranged from 2 to 100 out of a total score of 63 with the mean sore of 71.47(±28.52). Anxiety scores ranged from 0 to 45 out of a total score of 63 with the mean score of 14.4(±9.91). Depression scores ranged from 1 to 50 with out of a total score of 63 with the mean score of 20.0(±9.95). 2. Pearson's correlation analysis revealed a negative correlation between daily life activities and anxiety (r = -0.35, p = 0.00) and depression (r = -0.27, p = 0.07). But there was a significant positive correlation between levels of depression and anxiety (r = 0.55, p = 0.00). 3. Multivariate linear regression analysis was performed to finding the relationships among variables found significant in t-test, one-way ANOVA and Pearson's correlation analysis. Those respondents living with their family(B = -11.78, p = 0.01) showed a negative correlation between physical activity level in daily life (B = -0.09, p = 0.02) and levels of anxiety. There were negative correlations between educational levels(junior high school graduates :B = -7.56, p = 0.02, college graduates :B = -9.73, p = 0.00) and depression levels and between physical activity level in daily life(B = -0.07, p = 0.04)and depression levels. Thus the study provided evidence that depression and anxiety in stroke patients significantly affect their daily life activities and that there is a significantly positive correlation between levels of depression and anxiety. Many stroke patients slip into depression and anxiety as they have difficulty performing daily functions, and levels of depression and anxiety are correlated with their physical activity levels. It is therefore necessary to provide stroke patients with emotional support as part of the rehabilitation programs to help them increase rehabilitation efforts and quality of life.
