Factors Related to Physical Activity in Community-Dwelling

Abstract

dc:description

Decreased physical activity resulting form sedentary lifestyle is associated with high morbidity and mortality. Persons with disability are supposed to have higher risks for mortality and morbidity compared to other able persons because they are mostly sedentary. Therefore, this exploratory study was conducted to analyze occupational, household, leisure-time and total physical activity in persons with disability and to examine factors related to physical activity. The goal was to provide data for the development of more efficient interventions. The subjects for this study were 153 persons with disability (persons with spinal cord injury 78, persons with brain injury75), form five hospitals, two rehabilitation centers and Disabled Persons Association located in Gyeonggido. Physical Activity Scale for Individuals with Physical Disabilities was used to measure physical activity. The data were collected from August 8 to August 24 using a structured questionnaire with interviews and self reports. The collected data were analyzed using SPSS Window program version 12.0 program. The results of this study are summarized as follows. 1. The age distribution was from twenty years to sixty nine years. There were 109 men (71.24%) and 44 women (28.86%). Of the respondents 111 were married (72.55%) and 77 (50.33%) graduated high school. 2. The mean level of physical activity was 18.05±18.04 Mets hr/day. The majority of the physical activity was leisure-time physical activity at 16.00±16.92 Mets hr/day. The level of household physical activity was 1.72±4.83 Mets hr/day, and the level of occupational physical activity was 0.33±1.92 Mets hr/day. 3. The result from a backward multiple regression analysis showed that two variables, age and self efficacy were related to physical activity. And these two variables accounted for 10% of physical activity in disabled persons. In conclusion, in order to increase physical activity in persons with disability, solid physical activity promotion strategies need to be established according to age and in order to increase self-efficacy, persons with disability will require new strategies of intervention programs.
