Related factor of delirium occurrence in the Intensive Care Unit patients

The purpose of this study was to investigate the related factor of delirium occurrence in the ICU patients. The sample was 99 patients in the ICU at one university hospital located in Kyunggi-do. Data were collected from September 1 to October 31, 2006. The assessing tool for delirium was CAM-ICU developed by the Ely E W. Data were analyzed by SPSS 13.0 for frequency, percent, the mean, standard deviation, t-test and chi- square test. The results of this study were summarized as follows: 1. Patients data: Sex consists of male 58(58.6%) and female 41(41.4%). The average age was 58.24±16.40. The married were 90(90.9%). The occurrence of delirium in the ICU patients was 22 patients(22.2%) of 99 patients. 2. There were significant difference of delirium occurrence in some factors; past history(x²＝ 10.634, p＝.001), long hospitalization(t＝2.386, p＝.025), long ICU hospitalization(t＝4.280, p ＝.000), restraint experience(x²＝ 9.733, p＝.002), intubation or tracheostomy experience(x²＝ 5.363 , p＝.021), ventilator experience(x²＝ 5.893, p＝.015), high pain score (t＝2.246, p＝.027), high anxiety score(t＝4.746, p＝.000) As above results, this study hope for ICU nurses should recognized and prevent to delirium in the ICU at nursing practice.
