Comparison of three dust sources in Iceland: Dyngjusandur, Mýrdalssandur and Sandkluftavatn

Dust, a growing concern due to its impact on ecosystems and human health, has prompted increased research and awareness. This study focuses on dust source activity in Iceland, specifically in Dyngjusandur, Mýrdalssandur, and Sandkluftavatn. These locations are known as "hot spots" for dust events. Dust emissions are primarily associated with hot, dry deserts, but high-latitude regions like Iceland also contribute to dust emissions. Dust has various ecological impacts, such as influencing climate dynamics and marine ecosystem enrichment. The study utilizes data from the DustTrak DRX device to analyze particulate matter concentrations, PM1, PM2,5, PM4, and PM10, which can have adverse health. The available data reveals that Dyngjusandur experiences the highest number of dust events, followed by Sandkluftavatn and Mýrdalssandur. These findings have implications for public health, as PM10 concentrations in Dyngjusandur exceed >1000 μg/m³ five times and four times at Sandkluftavatn, highlighting the potential health risks for nearby populations and visitors. The mean value of PM10 concentrations at Dyngjusandur, during the measuring time was 62 μg/m³. Mean value of PM10 at Sandkluftavatn during measuring time was 3.013 μg/m³ and at Mýrdalssandur the mean value of PM10 during the measuring time was 125 μg/m³. The study also considers the dispersion of dust particles, which can travel over long distances, affecting the North Atlantic Ocean and the Arctic Ocean. However, limitations in the available data for these locations suggest the need for more extensive and consistent monitoring to facilitate a comprehensive comparison of dust events in these areas. Overall, this research contributes to a better understanding of the distribution and impact of dust in Iceland's diverse landscapes, emphasizing the importance of monitoring and managing dust-related challenges.
