Diversification and debt : Australian evidence / Jean Milva Canil.

Abstract

dc:description.abstract

Focuses on the association between diversification and debt, and concurrent shareholder wealth effects for Australian firms, in order to answer the question of why firms diversify. Whilst not directly answering the question, the thesis shows that diversified firms have relatively more long-term and unsecured debt, and do not need to provide the same level of debt protection as specialised firms in order to sell their debt. If offering debt protection is costly, then the benefits of having the capacity to issue safe debt may partly explain why corporate diversification exists.
