Qualitative inquiry into the decision-making processes for lower extremity amputation in people with diabetes

This research explored how decisions are made about lower limb amputation for people with diabetes. Using a qualitative research approach, this project engaged with people living with a diabetes-related foot ulcer or amputation, health practitioners, and experts to explore what supports and considerations people require when making decisions for non-emergency amputation. From three studies, this research established recommendations for supporting amputation decisions including: sharing information about expectations and personal goals in the presence of support networks; initiating early discussions about amputation to allow time for an informed decision and to support positive quality of life. This information about amputation should be communicated in a respectful and honest manner, to ensure all participants involved in the decision feel that their perspectives and needs are valued.
