This dissertation investigates whether young volunteers show a different profile of diseases during their time abroad than older ones. While the risk profile of the latter is well described little is known about those aged between 18 and 30. Because of different risk management of younger people significant differences should be found. A retrospective analysis by standardized questionnaire was uses, inclusion criteria were: age between 18 and 30 years and duration of project of at least 6 months. 153 complete data sets could be evaluated. 53% were females, the destinations were as follows: 65.4% Latin America, 14.4% Africa, 9.8% Asia, 10.5% other countries. The mean age was 20 years. 83% of participants received some kind of advice in travel medicine. Health problems were surprisingly common and included some potentially life-threatening diagnoses. Half of the volunteers reportet new sexual contacts. The risk profile differs considerably from those of older employees. Young people need a target audience specific standardized training for health and safety while they stay abroad.
