This study was performed to clarify whether xenon anaesthesia or xenon in combinations with other volatile anaesthetics, such as isoflurane, sevflurane, halothane or enflurane alter blood coagulation.Methods: The study was performed with 40 healthy pigs. They first underwent xenon monoanaesthesia (65 Vol%) and were then randomly assigned to combinations of xenon and isoflurane, xenon and sevoflurane, xenon and halothane or xenon and enflurane at varying concentrations. During anaesthesia routine coagulation tests (activated thromboplastin time, prothrombin time, fibrinogen concentrations, platelet count) and thrombelastographic measurements were made. Thrombelastography has proven to be a useful monitor of the coagulation process from initiation of clotting to the final stages of clot lysis or retraction.Results: Xenon monoanaesthesia did not significantly alter any coagulation parameters. When isoflurane was introduced the aPTT showed a significant increase while fibrinogen concentratins decreased. The introduction of sevoflurane also led to a decrease in fibrinogen concentration. When halothane was introduced it also showed an increase in aPTT, whereas the introduction of enflurane led to no significant alterations in the coagulation parameters. Although the described changes were statistically significant, none of the parameters exceeded the limits of normal values.Conclusion: During surgery platelets and coagulation may be affected by a variety of factors, including anaesthesia, other medications, surgical stress and renal or hepatic dysfunction. Therefore the pigs were only anaesthetised to minimise possible side effects.
