To have failure knowledge is to know what is not right or what one must not do. Failure knowledge is acquired in the process of handling customer or production problems. The knowledge need to be transferred between organisational units, between competencies, and between processes. Primary research questions could be formulated as follows: - How can an organisation overcome spatial, temporal, and conceptual barriers for collecting and using failure knowledge in the distributed product life cycle? - How can an organisation organise failure knowledge in an organisational memory repository to enable and enhance learning in a complex variant oriented production environment? - How can an organisation model improvement processes to support the distributed handling of failure cases? The thesis deploys a knowledge transformation approach to construct an organisational memory repository. The repository allows the process oriented storage of failure cases and considers the change pressures in knowledge intensive companies. The repository plays also an active part in networking virtual improvement teams. These teams are supported in the coordinated handling of failure cases. The repository approach has been realised in a software tool suite and evaluated in case studies.
