The procedures have been adapted on the demands of the further treatment. One- and two stage membrane-plants have been piloted, a cleaning concept has been developed and filtrates and permeates produced have been analysed.It became evident that the two stage plants and a flat membrane reverse osmosis plant were suitable in technical respect. Chemical and physical properties met the demands of German drinking water law. In microbiological respect some further treatment is necessary. Ceramic and submerged hollow fibre ultra filtration membranes were as well suitable for pre-treatment of biologically treated and clarified wastewater for reverse osmosis as micro filtration membranes in pressure tubes. By taking the waste water directly from the bioreactor used as an MBR even more advantages seem to be available. That is the reason why the decision for investment was made for that kind of technology that can be developed to an complete MBR-plant. The side stream MBR of Wehrle might be a feasible alternative to the tested systems, but another Piloting would have taken too much time.
