It is assumed that a deficit in controlling motor reactions is responsible for the impulsive behaviour of children displaying extraversive disorders. The stop signal task, in which subjects have to suppress an ongoing motor reaction on the cue of a stop signal, seemed to provide a good method to test children’s inhibition capacity. We used a task which was suitable for children: They had to destroy a spaceship with a rocket, but had to suppress their reaction when they heard a tone. The stop-signal-delay was changed dependent on the subject’s inhibition performance. We examined 133 boys in the age range of seven to sixteen years who were treated at the inpatient or outpatient clinic of the Department of Child Psychiatry of the Technical University of Aachen. Comparing the results of the tested clinical groups with a control group, significant differences could be found neither for primary reaction time nor for the inhibition quote or the stop signal reaction time. These results speak against the prevailing theory of an inhibition deficit in children with extraversive disorders. On the contrary, boys suffering from ADHD, CD or the co morbid disorder could inhibit their reaction just as well as the control group children. The results of this study suggest that the stop signal task is neither suitable to distinguish children with extraversive disorders from healthy children nor for a reliable diagnosis.
