To avoid this rejection, HLA-matching is performed prior to bone marrow transplantations. This is done to guarantee optimal correspondance of observed HLA-alleles. Allocation of organs to be transplanted may be influenced by the investigation of defined HLA constellations and their tolerance. It is shown that a defined number of HLA mismatches between graft and host may cause different effects in the MLC. Furthermore, there are mismatches that may not be recognized as foreign and therefore do not cause relevant effects in the MLC. The results of these tests show that not only HLA-typing but also the effects of mismatches in the MLC should be considered concerning the allocation of organs. Future experiments should reveal other important constellations. Today, the medication after organ transplantation leads to a total suppression of the immune system of the host. A more selective manipulation could modify this generalized suppression. It is shown that zinc inhibits the allogeneic reaction in the MLC but does not influence the antigenic reaction to tetanus-toxoid. These in vitro results were confirmed ex vivo. Zinc is an essential trace element for the whole organism that fulfills all conditions of optimal immunomodulation.
