The contents of programmes of media groups are dictated in the offices of the Board of Directors by managers with university degree in economic sciences. The leading principle of this commercialisation of the television system are fast and low-budget productions with high audience ratings and profit from advertising. It seems that exactly the field of talk shows meets these requirements. Within ten years, the number of talk shows on German television increased by 30 times as much as before. Due to the increasing spread of this branch, the work of journalists has changed as well as their image in the general public. With reference to the historical development of talk shows in the United States of America, the dissertation examines the development of talk shows in Germany in the years 1994 to 2002. The primary analysis deals with the business and the moral of talk show producers and the tense relations of media, politics and opinion research. Here, it becomes clear that the reflection about journalistic behaviour becomes a victim of the sharp pressure of competition between television programmes. The effect of talk shows is the contents of the secondary analysis. The author attended as guest in various talk shows of editorial offices. She gets to know everyday life in the examined editorial offices as a mixture of ideologies of media managers, specific forms of perception of events, working process rituals and professional routine. As an example, the thesis illustrates by means of numerous examinations with reference to number and contents of talk shows, that most of the employees in TV offices do not fulfil journalistically defined tasks. Professional measures such as truth, reality and objectivity are subject to economical, technical and organisational requirements as well as to the oppression of audience ratings. Neither the so-called self-criticism of the producers nor criticism from the political side result in a reflection of the ethics of media and a change of contents of the programmes. Politics and media instrumentalize eachother. Powerful men and critics are already sitting in the same boat, politics are politics made by media. Especially the field of talk shows prevents a critically detached association with politicians. Due to the fact that journalistic entertainers prefer to sit nicely on the sofa with politicians to talk and hardly try to look for the truth, the spectators have no chance to make up their mind with respect to opinions, wishes and decisions. Primilarily, the talk show is subject to the primacy of economical success, and is increasingly having the effect to be opposed towards democracy. The aim of the presented dissertation is to make clear this process. As a consequence, an exchange between media, science and schools is required. By means of media pedagogics, even young TV spectators would be in the position to expose the interdependencies of the so-called media democracy, which is a basic requirement for the participation in democracy.","abstract_html":"As a consequence of the loss of monopoly and importance of the public television in the 80ies, the media market in the 90ies is increasingly dominated by commercial interests.
