In Germany indeed there were only studies about invasive diseases caused by pneumococcals so far. The present study closes down this Vacancy of respiratory tract infections caused by pneumococcals. A total of 961 isolates of Streptococcus pneumoniae were examined from 19 different medical microbiology laboratories. During the sensivity testing the following resistance rates were shown: penicillin G 6.6%; clarithromycin 10.6%; tetracycline 13.9%; and levofloxacin 0.1%. Only 2 of 126 tetracycline-resistant pneumococcal yielded the existence of a tetO resistance genotype, the rest belonged to the tetM genotype. During the characterization of the makrolid-resistant pneumococcal there were 74% of the genera recognized as ermB-resistance genotype positive. 20.5% belonged to the mefE types of resistance, respectively. Four strains showed no PCR product in repeated assays. A total of 415 strains were serotyped.
