Moreover, it tries to illustrate the historical development from a natural landscape to a cultivated region. Beginning in historical times, the reader is led through the evolution of a regionally confined area (Eifel), from early to modern geoscientific exploration. Concentrating on the most significant classical facts, this work focuses on the beginnings of Eifel exploration. The reader will gain an insight into the discoveries that led to the modern understanding of Eifel geology. The Eifel's long history of exploration can in some areas be directly related to mining activities. Historical and modern geological and paleontological research in the Eifel area is of both national and international importance. Advances in the understanding of volcanology, in part based on the abundance of maars, as well as providing the type location for the Lower to Middle Devonian stratigraphic boundary highlight its global significance. The Eifel is part of the 'Linksrheinisches Schiefergebirge', a prominent fold-and-thrust belt covering the border area of Germany, Belgium and Luxembourg. Its internationality supported the Eifel's regional significance from very early on. Stratigraphically the Eifel consists of early Paleozoic to Cenozoic lithologies. Hitherto, only three publications deal with the Eifel's geology in its entirety. Early work by STEININGER (1822, 1853) provided a first geological map and description of the complete Eifel, respectively. FOLLMANN (1918) too gives a geological description of the Eifel area as a whole, but lacks detail in comparison with STEININGER's earlier work. Finally WILHELM MEYER (1994) follows their footsteps by publishing the third edition of the up to date most complete and most elaborate work. Many authors have dedicated their works in the last 200 years to regional subranges and individual scientific topics. They created basics for the following generations of geologists. The establishment of the Eifel as Germany's 14th national park in 2004, combines its natural features with the long provided public relations work.
