The purpose of this retrospective study was to evaluate the clinical performance of two types of zirconia (ZrO2) posts. From August 1996 to May 2000, 104 nonvital teeth in 68 patients were restored using 76 cylindro-conical zirconia posts (CosmoPost, IvoclarVivadent, FL-Schaan) and 43 conical posts (Cerapost, Komet, D-Lemgo). Patients with periodontitis, severe parafunction and root canal fillings less than ISO 40 in diameter were excluded from the study. 39 CosmoPosts were placed in anterior teeth. In 24 posterior teeth 37 posts were inserted (7 posterior teeth received 2 and 3 received 3 posts). 31 Ceraposts were placed in anterior teeth. In 10 posterior teeth 12 posts were inserted (2 posterior teeth received 2). In 11 cases the posts were used as a postendodontic stabilisation. 108 posts were used prior to veneer (2), inlay (5), crown (79) or bridge (7) placement. The root canal was prepared with standardized set of burs, rinsed with a saline solution and dried with paper points. Either a self-curing dentin adhesive (ED Primer, Kuraray, J-Osaka) or a dual-curing dentin adhesive (Syntac without Heliobond, IcoclarVivadent) was applied with special brushes. The posts were either silicoated for 13 sec. (modified Rocatec method, 110 µm grain, ESPE, D-Seefeld) and silanated followed by luting with a dual-curing resin (Variolink II, IvoclarVivadent) or blasted with Al203, under same conditions followed by luting with a self-curing resin (Panavia 21 EX, Kuraray). Radiographs of the restored teeth were taken after insertion and at recall appointments. The CosmoPosts were evaluated after an average observation period of 39,8 (± 5,8) months. The Ceraposts were evaluated after a mean observation period of 34,4 (±11,9) months. No absolute failure such as root fracture, post or core fracture was recorded to date (10/2001). Four relative failures occurred with CosmoPosts: 2 as a loss of friction and 2 due to chipping of the core ceramic during the temporary restoration phase.
