A model of the domain where brokering takes place is central for information brokering. Existing works in the field of ontology-based information systems are focused on the representation of information offers, whilst works from the adaptive information systems community are centered on the personalization of information based on a domain model. This thesis focuses on personalized Information-Brokering. The thesis brings together the two communities (ontology-based information systems and adaptive information systems) and enters into the question, how the central domain model should be structured, to allow an effective Mapping of information desires to the domain model. The answer to this question (and the result of the thesis) is, that the domain model should be structured by Categories and Concepts. Concepts can be organized to an hierarchy of concepts and can hold relations to other Concepts. Concepts represent the type of information the broker deals with. Categories can be organized to category hierarchies. Whilst Concepts can hold relations to other Concepts, Categories cannot build relations to other Categories. Categories are used for the representation of possible user interests. Category hierarchies usually describe characteristics of Concepts. The ideas of this thesis has been implemented in the brokering toolkit Broker’s Lounge. Broker’s Lounge can be used to build up a brokering system for a new domain with minimal effort. To demonstrate this effect three applications of Broker’s Lounge in three different domains were described. Broker’s Lounge ist domain independent and adaptive to the information desires of its users. Broker’s Lounge pools the benefits of ontology-based information systems and adaptive information systems. Broker’s Lounge can be classified as an domain independent, adaptive information system that is expected (by the adaptive information system community) to be realized in a couple of years. Broker’s Lounge can also be characterized as an ontology-based information system that is user-adaptive.
