A hand jet device (ERC Microetcher, Danville engineering Inc., Danville, Virginia, the USA) attached with an adapter to the air supply of a dental chair was used. The SiOx had a particle size of 110 µm. It was applied with 4 bar blasting pressure, a distance between nozzle and fractured veneer by 1 cm and a blasting time of 5 s for cleaning, roughening, and simultaneous silca coating. During the investigation period of 5 years the patients were follow-up examined as far as possible with an interval of 6 months. Absolute failures (e.g. loss of repaired veneer) and relative failures (e.g.discolouration) were examined, as well as Oral hygiene index and Gingiva index. The analysis of the clinical follow-up examinations showed, that after the investigation period still 75% of observed repairs were in situ, whereby the duration in situ varied but amounted at least 6 month. A total of 17 absolute and 8 relative failures had occurred. Both Oral hygiene index and Gingiva index showed no local degradation. In summary the examined method proved as user-friendly, effective and economical. Intraoral silica coating can be recommended as medium-term therapy.","abstract_html":"The repair of fractured ceramic veneers by intraoral silica coating was examined at 42 patients with altogether 60 ceramic-fused-to-metal crowns and bridges regarding their clinical applicability.
