dc:descriptionThe amplitude modulation following response (AMFR) is an answer of the human auditory system to amplitude modulated tones. This dissertation is concerned with experimental investigations of AMFR and its modeling by means of an inner ear model and dipole source analysis. Important topics of the thesis are electrophysiological experiments regarding the dependency of the AMFR amplitude and phase on stimulation parameters. It is shown which statistical methods are suitable for the application of AMFR in diagnostics. In masking experiments it is shown that AMFR allows a frequency specific assessment of hearing capacity by means of the AMFR phase. The degree of frequency specificity is estimated. Using the dipole source analysis of multi-channel EEG recordings it is shown that different neural stations of the auditory pathway contribute to AMFR. The amount of contribution depends on the modulation frequency. For modulation frequencies up to about 60 Hz sources in the auditory cortex are dominant, for higher frequencies sources in the brainstem predominate. A nonlinear inner ear model is introduced representing the electrical excitation of the auditory nerve in response to arbitrary sound pressure variations at the eardrum. The model is able to simulate important results of electrophysiological and psychoacoustical measurements. The realisation of the model contributes substantially to an understanding of the originating mechanisms of AMFR and allows the quantitative description of the influence of inner ear processes on the AMFR phase.
