Electronic transport in ropes of single wall carbon nanotubes
Abstract
dc:descriptionElectrical multi terminal measurements on ropes of single wall nanotubes have been conducted. Transport inside as well as between nanotubes has been charcterized. Recognizing the importance of non-invasive contacts for measurments of the intrinsic characteristics a new contact geometry has been proposed. It involves contacts attached to the rope from different sides (i.e. from the top and from the bottom). Using such a geometry the measurement is no longer affected by the contacts. The dominant scattering mechanisms in the nanotubes could be identified to be impurity scattering (temperature independent, Limp » 10 mm) and electron-phonon scattering (linear in temperature, Lel-ph » 10 mm at 250 K). The enormous scattering lengths proof the outstanding characteristics of carbon nanotubes regarding ballistic electronic transport. While transport inside nanotubes is very good, electronic coupling between nanotubes is known to be very weak. In order to study electronic transport between tubes, the intra-tube transport has been deteriorated by a controlled sputter treatment. This has led to strong localization effects inside the damaged nanotubes making inter-tube transport competitive and thus observable. The measurements have revealed the coupling mechanism (tunneling between tubes) and have given strong indication on the dominant phase breaking mechanisms, i.e. Nyquist and Thouless dephasing. The appendix supplies a sorted selection of literature on carbon nanotubes.
