The blood vessels were detected with two antibodies. One of these reacts with CD105 (Endoglin) and the other with CD34, a cell surface glycoprotein. The number of blood vessels was determined in three visual fields at x200 magnification. In most cases the vessel density was higher within the tumour than in the tumour border. A dependence of blood vessel density on the histological type or the development of metastasis could not be found. In some cases the blood vessel density was additionally determined in ten visual fields. To indicate a trend of high or low blood vessel density the evaluation of three visual fields was found to be sufficient. The anti-CD105 antibody marked tumour associated blood vessels better than the anti-CD34 antibody. This study leads to the conclusion that the determination of blood vessel density is no reliable prognostic factor for gastric carcinomas.","abstract_html":"In this study the blood vessel density in twenty nonmetastatic and thirty-three metastatic gastric carcinomas was immunohistochemically determined.
