When it comes to clinical manifestation of it we call it gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). A method for diagnosing GER is the combined pH-metry multiple intraluminal impedancene technique. It visualises any antero- or retrograde bolus movement inside the esophagus as well as changing in the pH, the bolus- and acidclearance time and the ceiling of a reflux event within the esophagus. Since the evaluation of the results of this diagnostic method are time consuming and depend on the investigator, it has not yet been established as a routine procedure. Apart from a validisation of an automatical analysis which is under way, it is just as necessary to find normal values in order to differentiate between pathologic and physiologic results. We have tried to find these normal values for children of different ages. In order to do so measurements of children, which presented with symptoms that could be caused by GER, were analysed. By a list of inclusion- and exclusion criteria all patients were excluded that had an anatomical or functional abnormality of the gastrointestinal tract. Over a three year period of time in the Department for Pediatric and Adolescent Medicine of the Universitiy Hospital Aachen 26 patients were found that fulfilled the expected criteria. They were subdivided in 5 age groups. The GER-patterns of these patiens were analysed according to the following parameters: the amount of reflux events during 24 hours and during one hour, the share of events that were accompanied by significant acid reflux, the bolusclearance time, the acidclearance time, the lowest pH-value of each event and resulting from the latter an allocation of each event to categories of acidity such as acid, weakly acid and non acid, and the ceiling of each event. Due to the small number of included patients in this study center no universally valid normal values could be found. Nevertheless the data characterises the examined collective and being pilot data can be regarded as a first reference of the parameters that were looked for. In order to find valid normal values beyond this pilot study, a multi-center investigation similar to this one has to be undertaken using a larger patient collective (n = 50 per age group).","abstract_html":"Gastroesophageal reflux (GER) happens physiologically.
