Typically, our perceptual performance in two-dimensional space is assigned by high accuracy specially in foveal regions. However, the spatial resolution of the visual system could be distorted by psychophysical variables as eccentricity or successive presentation of stimuli. This study deals with a perceptual error which is influenced by both factors. The clarification of this error should contribute to specify the visual processing of stationary stimuli. The misperception occurs when observers tend to localize the peripheral position of a briefly presented target as being more towards the fovea than a previously presented comparison stimulus. The first three experiments revealed that the mislocalization only emerged when the comparison stimulus and the target were presented successively. Varying the temporal interval between stimuli showed that the mislocalization reversed with longer stimulus-onset asynchronies. Further, the mislocalization was increased with a decrease of the spatial distance between stimuli. These findings suggested that the mislocalization originated from local excitatory and inhibitory mechanisms. Corroborating this idea a neuronal dynamic field model consisting of interacting excitatory and inhibitory neuronal cell populations was successfully developed to account for the findings. Due to the temporal and spatial activation dynamic it refers to attentional elements. Moreover, previous studies yielded evidence that the precision, with which stimuli are localized in the visual periphery, is improved under conditions of focused attention. Therefore, four further experiments examine whether focused attention is able to correct the relative localization error observed with successively presented stimuli. The mislocalization was tested under conditions with focused as well as distributed attention. Results revealed that the mislocalization increased with distributed attention and disappeared when stimuli appeared consistently at predictable positions and thus under conditions of focused attention. The findings are discussed in terms of the developed dynamic field model. In sum, action based attentional mechanism affect the representation of visual stimuli on an early level of the visual information processing.
