In this study, several sexually dimorphic features of the bony pelvis have been examined. Goals of this study were to test the accuracy of traditional methods for sexing the pelvis on a collection of recent pelvic girdles of middle European origin, evaluate common pelvimetric measurements, compare our findings to those of other authors, and develop a recommendation for a method of sex determination. 21 morphognostic and 15 morphometric sexually dimorphic features of the pelvis were selected from literature and evaluated on 100 bony pelvic girdles from the collection of the Department of Anatomy, Aachen. Additionally, another sexually dimorphic feature of the pelvic bone is presented which reaches high rates of correct classification in both observational and metric assessment. To visually assess this feature, both halves of the pelvis rest on the posterior iliac spine and the ischiopubic ramus. In this position, there is a space enclosed by the medial margins of the innominate bones which shows a sexual dimorphism. In observational sexing, the sex of 84,6% of pelves could be correctly determined using this method. To quantify this observation, we measured the distance between the anterior superior iliac spine and the superior margin of the symphysis on a perpendicular to a line constructed between that point and the most lateral point of the ischial tuberosity. The average distance was 39.31 mm (minimum 23 mm, maximum 54 mm) for the female and 21,02 mm (minimum 2 mm, max 38 mm) for the male pelves. We conclude that, while sex can usually be determined accurately using the pelvic bone, results of our study indicate that the traditional methods still leave room for improvement. We can recommend the use of the new feature “intercoxal shape” and the new measurement SIS-S for a use in observational methods of sex determination and discriminant analysis.","abstract_html":"Morphognostic and morphometric sexing of the human pelvic bone is an important task in the forensic examination of unknown skeletal material.
