Since the autoregulative maintenance of cardiorespiratory functions at this stage is very important, sleep studies seem a promising tool in the investigation of the causes of cot death. In the past two decades, numerous epidemiological studies pointed to a correlation between the incidence of cot death and the previous in utero nicotine exposure of the fetus. To date, few studies have examined their effects on cardio-respiratory phenomena in infants. Our retrospective study compares 37 polysomnography of 32 children (16 m/16 f) of a study group of 86 children with 95 polysomnography (34 w / 52m) of a control group taking into account the number and length of various forms of apnea. We were interested in the following cardiorespiratory: to sigh apnea, central apnea, obstructive apnea, mixed apnea and periodic breathing. Premature infants, children with overt organic diseases and children with a history of references to related breathing disorders or respiratory control disorders in the first year, were excluded from our study. Statistical analysis was performed using linear and logistic regression analysis. Linear regression analysis showed a significant (weak) negative effect of in utero nicotine exposure on the number of apneas after sighs, and the total duration and a significant positive effect on the average length of obstructive sleep apnea. An influence on the number of obstructive sleep apnea and those variables associated with central apnea and periodic breathing could not be proven. Logistic regression analysis showed a significant dose-dependent effect on the number of obstructive apnea, their average and maximum duration. With a cigarette consumption of more than ten cigarettes per day, the probability of occurrence of obstructive sleep apnea increased by more than 25%. In summary, the results of our study suggest a dose-dependent influence on cardio-respiratory control mechanisms as an expression of increased vulnerability for cardiorespiratory disorders. Given the numerous and uncontrollable effects on the unborn life, future public health programs should particularly emphasize the harmful effects of parental smoking habits.","abstract_html":"Sudden infant death generally occurres at night during sleep with a peak incidence in the second and third month of life.
