Norm-determining subspaces
This thesis will centre on the concept of norming subspaces in the dual of a Banach space. We shall consider a weakly-dense subspace V of E', and the natural norm it generates on E. If this new norm is equivalent to the original norm on E, then V is called norming or norm-determining.

Minimal Norm Constrained Interpolation
… problem of computing the interpolant of minimal norm from a convex cone in a normed dual space. This is an extension of de Boor's work on minimal norm unconstrained interpolation.</p>

lp-Norm Multiple Kernel Learning

Extending minkowski norm illuminant estimation
… field. We first revisit the Minkowski Family Norm framework for illuminant estimation. Because, of all the simple statistical approaches, it is the most general formulation and, crucially, delivers the best results. This thesis makes four technical contributions. First, we reformulate the …

Mitigating Negative Perceptions Due to Gender Norm Violation Through Adherence to Another Prevalent Gender Norm
… Surveys, 2012). As with any shift in a cultural norm, there has been pushback from society for those women violating these naming conventions. Individuals who violate gender norms are viewed more negatively than those who adhere to them (e.g., Koenig, 2018), with recent evidence suggesting …

The Truth Norm Account of Justification
… is the claim that belief is subject to a truth norm – i.e. a norm or standard that says that one should believe something if and only if it’s true. It claims that belief being subject to such a truth norm can explain which beliefs count as justified and which do not. After introducing the idea …

Lp norm estimation procedures and an L1 norm algorithm for unconstrained and constrained estimation for linear models
… errors in a linear regression model departs from normality, the method of least squares seems to yield relatively poor estimates of the coefficients. One alternative approach to least squares which has received a great deal of attention of late is minimum Lp norm estimation. However, …

Metanorms, Topologies, and Adaptive Punishment in Norm Emergence
Norms provide a means to regulate the behaviour of the members of a society, organisa¬tion or system. While much work has been done on various aspects of norms, normative systems and normative behaviour, this work has been limited in several respects. In particular, the problems of norm emergence …

China and transparency norm development in global extractives governance
… initiatives commonly emphasize a transparency norm to cope with these new global challenges. At the same time, the influence of Chinese actors in global extractive sectors has been increasing along with China's rapid economic growth and rising natural resources demands. Notably, Chinese actors …

Norm Conformity and Social Identity In Collective Action Groups
… can increase social identification is through norms, or expectations for group-related behavior. Social identity is generated among norm conformers through increasing perceptions of similarity - a necessary and sufficient precondition for identification. Based on this reasoning I suggest that …

Tracking the evolution of the norm of refugee protection
… laid the groundwork for the establishment of a norm of refugee protection as a standard of appropriate behaviour toward refugees. The paper aims to prove this first assertion by employing the Constructivist-based norm life-cycle theoretical framework advanced by Martha Finnemore and Kathryn …

A motivic norm structure on equivariant algebraic K-theory
… model categorical setup to reproduce the motivic norm functors, which were originally defined in \cite{BH}. In the second part, we define a theory of orientation in $A$-equivariant motivic homotopy theory, at least for a finite abelian group $A$. As an application, we prove the equivariant motivic …

The Gowers norm in the testing of Boolean functions
A property tester is a fast, randomized algorithm that reads only a few entries of the input, and based on the values of these entries, it distinguishes whether the input has a certain property or is "different" from any input having this property. Furthermore, we say that a property tester has …

H-Infinity Norm Calculation via a State Space Formulation
… for linear systems that minimize the H-infty norm of a specific closed-loop transfer function. The H-infty optimization problem initiated by Zames (1981), \\cite{zames1981feedback}, has received a lot of interest since its formulation. In H-infty control theory one uses the H-infty norm of a …

Functional Norm Regularization for Margin-Based Ranking on Temporal Data
… this dissertation is that use of the functional norm regularization can help alleviating mentioned challenges, by improving generalization abilities and/or learning efficiency of predictive models, in this case specifically of the approaches based on the ranking SVM framework. The temporal nature …
