A Model to Simulate Lateral-Force Response of Reinforced Concrete Structures With Cylindrical and Box Sections
In this study, an analytical model to compute the lateral-force response of large stubby reinforced concrete structures with cylindrical and box sections is derived. Three displacement components, flexure, bar slip, and shear, are considered under monotonically increasing load and load reversals.

Design of a mechanism to increase lateral force resistance of an autonomous ship hull cleaning robot
… of this thesis is to look specifically at the lateral force resistance of elastomeric suction cup mechanisms. Here we propose new design concepts for the attachment system to improve on the drag force resistance of the HullCrawler device.

Bio-Inspired Segmented Self-Centering Rocking Frame
… and modeling of a human spine-inspired seismic lateral force resisting system. The overall goal is to create a design for a lateral force resisting system that reflects human spine behavior that is both practical and effective. The first phase of this project involved a literature review of the …

Nanomechanics of cartilage extracellular matrix macromolecules
… was assessed via microcontact printing and lateral force microscopy. Lateral force between aggrecan and the probe tip, and compression of aggrecan was simultaneously measured in 0.001 - 1.0 M NaCl aqueous solutions. Using the microsized tip (Rtip ~ 2.5 [mu]m) enabled a large assembly of ~ …

The structural interaction of pipe couplings used for trenchless construction.
… site conditions and the skill level of the workforce. Poor directional control of the pipeline can lead to pipe joints opening which induces high stresses in the pipe and produces a loading mechanism for the structural element of the coupling system. This study has investigated the structural …

STRUCTURAL ASSESSMENT OF MULTIPLE STORY STEEL BUILDINGS SUBJECTED TO BLAST LOADS
… order to analyze the effects of blast loads on lateral force resisting systems in hardened multistory steel buildings. The results obtained are targeted towards improving the design of buildings such as hospitals and defense offices which must maintain some level of serviceable operations in the …

Lateral Strength and Ductile Behavior of a Mortise-Tenon Connected Timber Frame
… of this project were to examine the amount of lateral force resisted by a single-bay mortise-tenon connected timber moment frame, and to introduce ductile behavior into the mortise-tenon connections by adding a steel sleeve around a traditional wood peg. This research aimed to provide proof …

Evaluation of Strength Reduction Factor for Concentrically Braced Frames Based on Nonlinear Single Degree-of-Freedom Systems
… Factor, is commonly used in the design of lateral force resisting systems under seismic loading. R-Factors allow for a reduction in design base shear demands, leading to more economical designs. The reduction of strength is remedied with ductile behavior in members of proper detailing. …

Beam-column connection flexural behavior and seismic collapse performance of concentrically braced frames
… and field observations demonstrated that reserve lateral force-resisting capacity due to the flexural strength of connections outside the primary lateral force-resisting system of steel frames can maintain structural stability if the primary system is damaged. Several experimental studies were …

Sensitivity Study on Modification of Vertical Distribution of Strength and Stiffness in Wood Shear Wall Building Models
… distribution (1) results from the ELF vertical force distribution method in ASCE 7 that assigns forces to each level based on weight and story height. The Triangular strength distribution (2) results from an assumed vertical force distribution that assigns lateral forces based on the seismic …

Design and Performance of Load Bearing Shear Walls Made from Composite Rice Straw Blocks
… of the prestressed Stak Block walls in a lateral force resisting application is quantified along with an approximation of potential design shear forces. It was determined that the Stak Block material performed satisfactorily in gravity and lateral force resisting applications, in some …
-
Experiment to Study Earthquake Response of R/c Structures With Stiffness Interruptions
… understanding of the earthquake response of reinforced concrete structures having abrupt interruptions in the lateral-force-resisting elements in adjacent stories. The study comprises both experimental and analytical phases. Experimental work includes earthquake simulation tests of four …
