  2. Restriction of Food Intake by Dorsomedial Hypothalamus

… profile leptin responsive neurons in the hypothalamus and brain stem. In addition to identifying several known leptin responsive populations, we found that neurons in Dorsomedial Hypothalamus (DMH) expressing GSBS are activated in ob/ob mice and suppressed by leptin treatment. Because ob …

  3. The Role of Sonic Hedgehog in the Hypothalamus

ABSTRACT THE REQUIREMENT OF SONIC HEDGEHOG IN THE HYPOTHALAMUS Solsire E. Zevallos Douglas J. Epstein Sonic hedgehog (Shh) is a morphogen secreted during early development that is required for the formation of the ventral neural tube, including the ventral forebrain. The prechordal source of Shh …

  4. Neural Stem / Progenitor Cells in the Adult Mouse Hypothalamus

… population of neural stem cells resides in the hypothalamus, more specifically in the ependymal lining of the third ventricle. In this thesis, I tested the hypothesis that stem cells exist in defined regions of the adult mouse hypothalamus. My work confirms the presence of stem / progenitor …

… (3), but changes occurring in the ventromedial hypothalamus (VMH), a brain region that is responsible for initiating the counterregulatory response to hypoglycemia (4) is the most promising target. In the following studies, we utilized metabolomic (Chapter 2), transcriptomic (Chapter 3), and …

  6. Estrogen Signaling in the Ventromedial Hypothalamus Modulates Adipose Tissue Metabolic Adaptation

… in the ventrolateral region of the ventromedial hypothalamus (vlVMH), a sex-dimorphic structure that directly modulates brown adipose tissue (BAT) thermogenesis. We previously showed that an ERαvlVMH-originated neural circuit responds to changes in ambient temperature and nutritional states, …

  8. The Effects of Progesterone on Extracellular Serotonin Levels in Rat Hypothalamus

… serotonin were monitored in the ventromedial hypothalamus (VMN), midbrain central grey (MCG) and medical preoptic area (POA) using microdialysis. Rats primed with estradiol benzoate (5 μg) were anesthetized with choral hydrate (400 mg/kg, i.p.). Samples were collected at 20 minute intervals. …

  9. Altered Fuel Supply and Utilization in the Hypothalamus Following Recurrent Hypoglycemia

These findings indicate that local substrate concentrations in the VMH are altered by RH and are affected by glycogen availability and noradrenergic activity. The changes in local energy supply contribute to the impaired CRR seen in RH, supporting a role for altered metabolism in HAAF.
