X
When a child, certain skies sharpened my vision: all their characters were reflected in my face. The Phenomena were roused. —At present, the eternal inflection of moments and the infinity of mathematics drives me through this world where I meet with every civil honor, respected by strange children …

Growth and Characterization of Carbon-Doped Aluminum(x) Gallium(1-X) Arsenide and Aluminum(x) Gallium(1-X) Phosphide
Carbon-doped GaAs and Al$\sb{\rm x}$Ga$\sb{\rm 1-x}$As with carbon concentrations ranging from 2 $\times$ 10$\sp $ cm$\sp{-3}$ to 3 $\times$ 10$\sp{20}$ cm$\sp{-3}$ have been characterized with Hall effect measurements, secondary ion mass spectrometry (SIMS), double crystal x-ray diffraction and …

Thermodynamics of disordered carbon(1-x)copper(x) and silicon(1-x)gold(x) near the metal-insulator transition
Measurements of the electron-phonon relaxation time are carried out, using both a direct and indirect method, in three dimensional films of C$\sb{1-x}$Cu$\sb x$ and Si$\sb{1-x}$Au$\sb x$ in the temperature range 0.3K-4K. The electron-phonon resistance and thermal boundary resistance are also …

An X Ray Study of the Structure of Potassium(1-X)-Rubidium(x)-Carbon(y)
The mixed layered compounds K$\sb{\rm 1-x}$Rb$\sb{\rm x}$C$\sb8$ and K$\sb{\rm 1-x}$Rb$\sb{\rm x}$C$\sb{24}$ represent quasi two-dimensional alloys interleaved by graphite hexagonal planes. We report extensive x-ray scattering investigations of the structural aspects of these compounds.

Optical & X-ray Studies of Ultraluminous X-ray Sources
Ultraluminous X-ray Sources (ULXs) are point like X-ray sources situated external to the nucleus of their host galaxy, with inferred X-ray luminosities in excess of 10^{39} erg s^{−1} . Although first observed ∼ 30 years ago, these sources are yet to be fully understood. Some have suggested that …

X-ray spectroscopy of low-mass X-ray binaries
I present high-resolution X-ray grating spectroscopy of neutron stars in low-mass X-ray binaries (LMXBs) using instruments onboard the Chandra X-ray Observatory and the X-ray Multi-Mirror Mission (XMM-Newton). The first part of this thesis concentrates on results from the subset of LMXBs with …

Imaging X-ray spectroscopy with micro-X and Chandra
High spectral resolution observations of X-ray phenomena have the potential to uncover new physics. Currently, only point sources can be probed with high resolution spectra, using gratings. Extended objects like supernova remnants cannot be dispersed, leaving the dense forest of emission lines …

Growth of Single Crystal, Metastable Ge(1-X)sn(x) Alloys and Ge(1-X)sn(x)/ge Strained-Layer Superlattices on Ge(001)2 X 1 by Molecular Beam Epitaxy
Single-crystal metastable diamond-structure $\rm Ge\sb{1-x}Sn\sb{x}$/Ge strained-layer superlattices (SLS) with x up to 0.24 (the equilibrium solid solubility of Sn in Ge is $<$0.01) were also grown on Ge(001)2x1 substrates using temperature-modulated molecular-beam epitaxy with maximum growth …

Noncollective X-Ray Thomson Scattering Diagnostic Development Based On A Titanium Hybrid X-Pinch X-Ray Source
X-ray Thomson scattering (XRTS) is the combination of elastic Raleigh scattering and inelastic Compton scattering observed from high density systems using energetic probe energies at the keV x-ray level. Thermal x-ray probes have historically been created by delivering 1014 [-] 1016 W/cm2 to a …

X Disease | Disease X: Medical Mystery-Solving and Epidemiological Change
This thesis addresses epidemiological knowledge-making in the face of new, unknown, emerging diseases. It uses two cases, Australian X Disease of the early 1900s and Disease X of the dawning 2000s, to broadly interrogate how medical mystery-solvers marshall forms of experimentation and …

HYDROGEN STORAGE CHARACTERISTICS OF ZIRCONIUM((IRON-X)(CHROMIUM-1-X))(,2).
A literature search has revealed that AB(,2)-type intermetallic compounds exhibit desirable hydrogen storage characteristics, such as high hydrogen capacities and rapid hydriding/dehydriding kinetics. In particular, research in recent years has focussed on so-called pseudobinary alloys …

X-ray spectroscopy of neutron star low-mass X-ray binaries
In this thesis, I present work spanning a variety of topics relating to neutron star lowmass X-ray binaries (LMXBs) and utilize spectral information from X-ray observations to further our understanding of these sources. First, I give an overview of important X- ray astrophysics relevant to the work …

Photoluminescence studies of carrier dynamics in (indium(x),aluminum(x)) gallium(1-x) arsenic/gallium arsenide quantum well structures
This thesis discusses carrier dynamics of III-V semiconductor quantum well structures probed by photoluminescence techniques in In$\sb{\rm x}$Ga$\sb{\rm 1-x}$As/GaAs and Al$\sb{\rm x}$Ga$\sb{\rm 1-x}$As/GaAs quantum well systems. Photoluminescence is a useful nondestructive probe of direct-gap …

Growth and characterization of epitaxial metastable (gallium arsenide)(1-x)(silicon(2))(x) alloys and (gallium arsenide)(1-x)(silicon(2))(x)/gallium arsenide strained-layer superlattices
Single-crystal metastable (GaAs)$\sb{\rm 1-x}$(Si$\sb2)\sb{\rm x}$ alloys with x $\leq$ 0.57 have been grown on GaAs(001) using a hybrid sputter deposition technique. Triple-crystal x-ray diffraction studies showed that the full-width at half maximum intensity of alloys with x $\leq$ 0.4 were …

X-Ray Machine Tests and X-Ray Experiments for Undergraduate Physics Laboratories
The Problem. In the spring of 1977, the Drake University Physics Department acquired an X-ray machine. There was a need to convert this device to an educational tool so it could be used on an undergraduate level. Procedure. First, the machine was tested to find its range limits. Secondly, numerous …
