Symmetric function generalizations of graph polynomials

The Chromatic MacMahon Function
… the weighted analogue of Stanley’s chromatic symmetric function, and prove that the weighted analogue of Crew’s conjecture is not true. Secondly, we generalize the chromatic symmetric function to the chromatic MacMahon function, and use that to prove the MacMahon analogue of Crew’s conjecture.

The Complete and Elementary Symmetric Functions as Quotients of Determinants
The standard definition of a Schur symmetric function, is as a quotient of a determinant

Point processes of representation theoretic origin
… In the first part we compute the correlation functions of the 4-parameter family of BC type Z-measures. The result is given explicitly in terms of Gauss's hypergeometric function. The BC type Z-measures are point processes on the punctured positive real line. They arise as interpolations of …

The involution principle and h-positive symmetric functions
… linear group of V is a sum of tensor products of symmetric powers of V. Expanding the iterated exponential function as a power series yields coefficients whose positivity implies the h-positivity of the characteristic of the symmetric group character whose value on the permutation w is the number …

Polarization Operators in Superspace
… rings with rich connections to combinatorics, symmetric function theory and geometry. Studies of a generalization of the classical coinvariant rings known as the diagonal harmonics have fruitfully produced many interesting discoveries in combinatorics including the q, t-Catalan numbers and the …

Statistically robust Pseudo Linear Identification
… the measurements through a nonlinear odd symmetric function, called the mb function, and let the covariance updating depend on how far away the measurement is from the prediction. In the original PLID the measurements are used unfiltered in the covariance calculation.

Diagrams of affine permutations and their labellings
… balanced labellings is the affine Stanley symmetric function which plays an important role in the geometry of the affine Grassmannian. Furthermore, we define set-valued balanced labellings in which the labels are sets of positive integers, and we investigate the relations between set-valued …

Deformations of characters, metaplectic Whittaker functions, and the Yang-Baxter equation
… theoretic quantities as generating functions on certain symmetry classes of ASMs or generalizations of them. Brubaker, Bump, and Priedberg used a Yang-Baxter equation to reprove Tokuyama's result and this work seeks to do the same for a generalization of Okada's results in type B. We …

Some aspects of the numerical solution of equilibrium problems in finite elasticity
… hyperelastic materials. The strain-energy function used to characterise these materials is based on a symmetric function of the principal stretches. All of the above ideas are investigated numerically for the problem of a pressurised rubber cylinder subjected to axial extension. This …

Studies on quasisymmetric functions
In 1983, Ira Gessel introduced the ring of quasisymmetric functions (QSym), an extension of the ring of symmetric functions and nowadays one of the standard examples of a combinatorial Hopf algebra. In this thesis, I elucidate three aspects of its theory: 1) Gessel's P-partition enumerators are …

Topology and combinatorics of low genus mapping spaces to projective space
… mixed Hodge structures, tropical moduli spaces, symmetric functions, and the Grothendieck ring of varieties. The results of the thesis extend the structures and results on the moduli spaces of low genus stable curves and genus zero stable maps to projective space, overcoming the subtlety caused …

PERFECT FLUIDS AND SIGMA MODELS: A MATHEMATICAL INVESTIGATION BETWEEN GENERAL RELATIVITY AND COTTON GRAVITY
… φ between Riemannian manifolds and several other functions and constants; they are called Cotton φ-Perfect Fluids (C-φ-PF) and φ-static perfect fluids space-times (φ-SPFST). The latter are special solutions of the Einstein field equations on a static space-time with matter sources modelled by a …

Asymptotics, exact results, and analogies in p-adic random matrix theory
… matrices and type A Heckman-Opdam hypergeometric functions. (2) We prove that the boundary of the Hall-Littlewood t-deformation of the Gelfand-Tsetlin graph is parametrized by infinite integer signatures, extending results of Gorin and Cuenca on boundaries of related deformed Gelfand-Tsetlin …

Some Results in Combinatorics and Combinatorial Geometry
… pairs of vertices x and y, where f is a fixed symmetric function satisfying a `monotonicity' condition? Wang showed that the so-called `greedy' tree maximises this quantity, while an `alternating greedy' tree minimises it. We solve the inverse problem and characterize precisely which trees are …
