The interfacial shear stress failure of flawed fiber composites
… is then used to compute the average fiber stress at composite failure. This allows calculation of composite strength by the well known law of mixtures. Composite strength determined by this method show good correlation with published experimental values for glass fiber composites.

Tensile and uniaxial/multiaxial fatigue behavior of ceramic matrix composites at ambient and elevated temperatures
… of the reinforcing fibers and the fiber/matrix interfacial shear stress both have significant effect on the strength and toughness of the unidirectional composite: a higher m value and a lower interfacial shear stress result in a lower strength; a lower value of m and a higher …

The single fiber pull-out test: a study of fiber/matrix interactions
… of friction, its continuation, as well as the interfacial shear stress, τ, of the bond, and τ associated with debonding and sliding. Based on a series of experiments of varying material parameters, a model material system was chosen: a polyimide coated fiber embedded in uncatalyzed …

Tensile behavior of unidirectional and cross-ply ceramic matrix composites
… distance at the characteristic strength, and interfacial shear stress. Comparisons of measured and calculated ultimate tensile strengths and strains to failure showed good agreement. This research was sponsored by the Naval Surface Warfare Center (NSWC) in Dahlgren VA.

Interfacial Thermomechanical Behavior of Hybrid Carbon Fibers
… on carbon fibers to improve the interfaces. The interfacial mechanics of the enhanced fibers are evaluated using nanoindentation studies. Composite samples with Aeropoxy matrix and vertically aligned fibers are fabricated for this purpose. A Bruker TI-980 TriboIndenter is used to perform …

STRUCTURAL RETROFITTING OF CONCRETE BEAMS USING FRP - Debonding Issues
… the cohesive model, such as initial stiffness, shear strength and fracture energy were proposed based on fitting FEM results to experimental results from literature. Initial stiffness was related to the adhesive properties. Shear strength and fracture energy were expressed as functions of …

Experimental and Numerical Study of Dual-Chamber Thermosyphon
… liquid film thermal resistance, gravity and interfacial shear stress, and implemented successive solution of mass, momentum and energy balance equations for both liquid and vapor phases. Rectangular microchannels achieved significantly higher heat transfer coefficient compared to a circular …

A machine learning study of wind-driven runback/flow-off multiphase flows pertinent to aircraft icing phenomena
… network is utilized to inversely forecast the interfacial shear stress field from thickness field. The last section of the study shifts its attention to the deicing fluids flow-off process during aircraft take-off. Deicing fluids employed on aircraft surfaces serve the purpose of mitigating ice …

Theoretical modeling of the actuation mechanism in integrated induced strain actuator/substructure systems
… model has been developed based on the plane stress formulation of the theory of elasticity for a surfacebonded induced strain actuator/beam substructure system. Closed-form solutions of the induced stress field were obtained in an approximate manner using the principle of stationary …

Novel Charging Station and Computational Modeling for High Thermal Conductivity Heat Pipe Thermal Ground Planes
… of this model is that it relies on empirical interfacial heat transfer coefficient data to very accurately model the interfacial energy balance at the vapor-liquid saturated wick interface. Wick samples for a TGP are tested in an experimental setup to measure the interfacial heat transfer …

Multiscale characterization of mechanochemical reactions in mechanophore-crosslinked polymers under shear loading
… to evaluate the transformation of SP to MC under shear loading conditions in bulk polymers and at the interface between a glass fiber and a polymer matrix. Spiropyran is successfully incorporated as a co-crosslinker into poly(methyl methacrylate) and the mechanical transformation of SP to MC, or …

Fundamental Studies In the Lamb-Wave Interaction Between Piezoelectric Wafer Active Sensor and Host Structure During Structural Health Monitoring
… the normal mode expansion methods (NME), the interfacial shear stress, hence, the load transfer from the PWAS to the structure through the bond layer, without limitations on the frequency and the number of modes. This allowed us to derive more accurate predictions of the tuning between PWAS …

Computation of the rise or fall of a drop through a suspending liquid with no mass transfer: Axisymmetric, transitional and complex regimes
… motion. Two different approaches to account for interfacial tension are demonstrated for the spherical interface: one using differential geometry arguments and the other using a higher-order least-squares fit to the interface. We show that these approaches have approximately the same convergence …
