Phase Separation in Highly Asymmetric Mixtures: From Charged Biopolymers to Binary Hard Disks
… of both additive and non-additive binary hard disk fluid mixtures, for very large size asymmetries. Using a systematic extrapolation in the non-additivity parameter I have been able to resolve the long-standing issue of fluid-fluid phase separation in the additive system.

An Exploration of Hybrid Hard Disk Designs Using an Extensible Simulator
… cost per bit ratio. Since replacing standard hard disks with flash disks is prohibitively expensive, hybrid hard disks augment the standard hard disk with a small amount of flash memory. By exploiting the beneficial aspects of both technologies they aim to provide breakthrough increase in …

An Interactive Visualization Model for Analyzing Data Storage System Workloads

The performance of hard disks has become increasingly important as the volume of data storage increases. At the bottom level of large-scale storage networks is the hard disk. Despite the importance of hard drives in a storage network, it is often difficult to analyze the performance of hard …

Scalable multi-access flash store for Big Data analytics
… the transportation of large amount of data from hard disks to where it can be processed, i.e. DRAM. In this work we examine an architecture for a scalable distributed flash store which aims to overcome this limitation in two ways. First, the architecture provides a high-performance, …

BlueFlash : a reconfigurable flash controller for BlueDBM
… latency and power advantages over traditional hard disks. However, in modern Big Data systems, simply replacing disks with flash does not yield proportional performance gains. This is because of bottlenecks in various levels of the system stack: I/O interface, network, file system and …

The expandable network disk
… servers that consist of CPU, memory, and hard disks, hold two kinds of information. The lower layer stores replicated immutable chunks of data, each indexed by a unique key. The upper layer maps each block address to the key of its current data chunk; each mapping is held on two bricks …

Study On Endurance Of Flash Memory Ssds
… but it is not a direct replacement for magnetic hard disks. Flash memory possesses fundamentally different characteristics and in order to fully utilize the positive aspects of flash memory, we must engineer around its unique limitations. The primary limitations are lack of in-place updates, the …

Storage system design for non-volatile byte-addressable memory using consistent and durable data structures
… turn uses the block layer to provide access to hard disk drives or solid state disks. With the advent of non-volatile byte-addressable memory (NVBM), buffered I/O systems designed primarily for hard disks are no longer the most efficient design for storage. We show that the overheads imposed by …

Big data analytics made affordable using hardware-accelerated flash storage
… storage has much better performance compared to hard disks, there are many hurdles to overcome in order to reach the performance of DRAM-based clusters. This thesis presents a new system architecture as well as operational methods that enable flash-based systems to achieve performance comparable …

Processing and Physical Functionality of Multicomponent High Entropy Materials
… in electric devices, semiconductors, engines, hard disks, and sensors. This study aims to synthesize high entropy materials and investigate the relationships between chemical compositions, microstructures, and functional properties. To fabricate various metallic thin films, including metallic …

Study of the training effect in exchange bias using the domain state model
… of the storage industry is the well known hard disk, based on the magnetic recording and reading of data. The research of magnetic materials is enhanced by the establishment of hard disks as a recording media. Given the current trend toward nanostructured materials and complex materials …

Exploring the Boundaries of Operating System in the Era of Ultra-fast Storage Technologies
The storage hardware is evolving at a rapid pace to keep up with the exponential rise of data consumption. Recently, ultra-fast storage technologies such as nano-second scale byte- addressable Non-Volatile Memory (NVM), micro-second scale SSDs are being commercialized. However, the OS storage stack …

Rethinking the design and implementation of the i/o software stack for high-performance computing
… access locality is weakened, if not lost, on hard disk, a widely used storage medium in high-end storage systems.

In this dissertation, we experimentally demonstrated such issues in four different layers, including operating system process management layer and MPI-IO middleware layer …

Soft Self-assembly and Densest Packings in Colloidal Models
… tun- able magnetic field. A theoretical model of hard spheres with point dipoles at their centers is used to guide the choice of experimental parameters and characterize the underlying materials physics. When the applied field is normal to the fluid layer, a checkerboard crystal forms; when the …
