  1. Economic analyses of the effects of calving season on beef cow-calf-forage systems

Important implications of the study are: beef cow-calf production is competitive over a wide range of beef prices and it may increase farm returns to feed small amounts of corn silage rather than grow additional pasture even when the weaned steer calf-corn ratio is quite low.

  2. Prevalence of antibodies to Bovine Leukemia virus, Neospora caninum and risk factors, and biosecurity practices in beef cow-calf herds in Canada.

A total of 4,778 cows from 179 herds were tested for antibodies to N. caninum using a commercially available ELISA. Neospora caninum herd-level seroprevalence ranged from 25.0% to 75.9% (a herd was considered positive with ≥ 2 cows testing positive). The true cow prevalence was estimated as 5.2% …

  4. Profitability Analysis of Forage Based Beef Systems in Appalachia

… Virginia is livestock production, particularly beef cow calf operations. However; topography and land holding patterns have resulted in a majority of small farms operating part time on less than 150 acres. These farms, while abundant, are not necessarily profitable. Management intensive grazing …

  5. Strategies to improve fertility of Bos taurus beef females enrolled in estrous synchronization protocols

… (ES) protocols enhances profitability of beef cow-calf operations by improving percentage of cows pregnant early in the breeding season and increasing kg of calf weaned per cow exposed. Many factors, however, influence the fertility of cattle enrolled to ES protocols. The overall goal of …
