Abstract

dc:description

Relevance of the study. The strategic documents of the Lithuanian education policy highlight the importance of developing a smart and civic-minded society by forming proactive communities, promoting sociality and nurturing the culture of trust. A lot of attention is given to the education of future generations. Promotion of sociality starts with primary education institutions and is an important part of the entire education system. Developing strong school communities and creating a sociality-based school culture is becoming a strategic landmark in the development of the Lithuanian education system. Sociality is considered one of the qualities of Jesuit education which is a non-traditional type of education. The foundational documents of Jesuit education, i.e. Ratio Studiorum, Ignatian Pedagogical Paradigm, Fundamentals of a Jesuit Education and Practical Approach to the Ignatian Pedagogical Paradigm, define the Jesuit education strategy which is directed towards the nurturing of community relations and promotion of sociality. Thus, a scientific interest arises to carry out a case study and to empirically verify the practical application of these education principles under real conditions. Research questions: Is the promotion of sociality deemed important in Jesuit primary schools? What are the teachers’ and students’ experiences of promoting and/or learning about sociality at the Jesuit Primary School? The object of the research is the promotion of sociality at the Jesuit Primary School. The aim of the research is to theoretically and empirically substantiate the importance of promoting sociality and its manifestation at the Jesuit Primary School. Research methods: theoretical analysis methods: analysis of scientific literature and strategic education-related documents; empirical research methods: structured interview, focus group, questionnaire-based mixed-mode survey. Key conclusions of the empirical research: 1) The students are mostly united by interrelations, cooperation, close community relations and joint activities; 2) Emotional interrelations comprise the element of sociality that is deemed typical to Jesuit primary schools; 3) Jesuit primary schools hold sociality in high regard; 4) Members of the community are mostly united by common values; 5) The teachers of the Jesuit Primary School tended to promote sociality by holding various events and activities and creating conditions for all participants of the educational program to communicate and cooperate.
