Abstract

dc:description

The bachelor thesis analyzes the knowledge of Šiauliai district school employees’ health, lifestyle habits and their connections with cardiovascular diseases. The methods of scientific literature analysis and quantitative research, statistical and descriptive analysis of research data were carried out. 257 employees of Šiauliai district schools participated in the research. The analysis of scientific literature reveals that the state of peoples’ health is inseparable from their life and lifestyle – diet, physical activity, stress, bad habits. These factors, if they are inappropriate, are hazardous to human health and cause chronic non-infectious diseases or disorders. In Lithuania, as in many other European countries, chronic non-infectious diseases are a relevant issue of public health. In Lithuania, mortality from cardiovascular diseases is not only increasing every year but also is one of the highest in Europe. The analysis of the research shows that most school employees do not follow the principles of a balanced diet, but rarely add salt to their food or sugar to tea and coffee. Most of the respondents spend very little time doing physical activity. More than half of the respondents are overweight or obese. Only a tenth of them smoke daily as well as rarely and moderately use alcoholic beverages. The majority of surveyed people have a good mental health at work. A big part of the participants visit their family doctor and perform preventive tests once or more a year. In addition, most of them have increased or high blood pressure, one third are not aware of their blood cholesterol levels, and more than a tenth of them have increased cholesterol levels in blood. Most people evaluate their health insufficiently good. Nearly one third of school employees are suffering from cardiovascular diseases. The higher the age of the respondents, the greater the morbidity of these diseases. Physical activity of the patients suffering from cardiovascular diseases is not sufficient. A statistically insignificant relationship between bad habits and morbidity of the cardiovascular system has been identified. Moreover, sick people are more likely to experience stress situations at work.
